Product Description

Ibis is never one to shy away from controversy, and the Tranny 29 Mountain Bike Frame is obviously no exception. By controversy, we of course mean the controversial way the frame is built, which allows for a bike that can transition between full cassettes and singlespeed. The heart of the Tranny is a feature called the Slot Machine, which governs chainstay length, adjusting it by up to 15mm in order to accommodate the differences between a singlespeed and a fully geared machine. No matter what your gearing needs are, the Tranny is never more than a single step away from meeting them. Both triangles are made from monocoque carbon, so regardless of how you run it, the Tranny takes advantage of its 29er pedigree by embracing speed without wasting watts due to high weight or low stiffness. It can also be split into two discrete pieces for ease of storage and transport.... Read More

Description: As the old adage goes, good things come to those who wait. And after waiting for the crafty folks at Ibis to meticulously dial every line and geometry detail, the Ripley Ibis Tranny 29 X01 Complete 2015 Mountain Bike is here to change your preconceived notions of just how fast and versatile a 29-inch hardtail can be. Whether you're ripping blistering fast XC loops or traveling to new riding locales, it's sure to put a smile on your face with its incredibly lightweight performance, super-agile feel, and easy-travelling disassembly, courtesy of its detachable rear triangle with Slot Machine technology. The updated 2015 Tranny leverages the fabled rolling benefits of 29-inch wheels, as well as a host of modern features, such as internal dropper post routing, tapered head tube, 142 x 12-millimeter Maxle rear axle, and BB92/PressGXP style integrated bottom bracket. However, the big story with the Tranny is its ability to convert to a singlespeed with its Slot Machine technology. This technology relies on a detachable rear triangle with Slot Machine tensioning unit found just behind the bottom bracket, with 15-millimeters of movement afforded to properly tension the chain when paired with a singlespeed drivetrain. Not only does this negate the need for an eccentric bottom bracket when you're converting it to singlespeed use, but it also allows for functionality with a Gates Carbon Belt Drive, should you opt to ditch chains entirely. Plus, this detachable rear triangle makes for effortless traveling and storage if you regularly fly with your bike or dissemble it for off-season storage. Staying true to its racing pedigree, the Tranny's low bottom bracket keeps it planted when railing turns, while its 17. 1-inch chainstays enhance its responsive, lively feel. The frame's Unified carbon construction optimizes the frame for exceptional stiffness and vibration dampening. Taking styling cues from the Ripley, the front triangle features balanced steering geometry and strik...

Ibis Tranny 29 Special Blend Complete Mountain Bike - 2015 Marine Layer, M
Description: At the heart of Ibis' Tranny 29 Special Blend Complete Mountain Bike is a feature called the Slot Machine, which governs chainstay length, adjusting it by up to 15mm. The Slot Machine lets you customize the bike's rear triangle for whatever set up you want to run. Short, nimble chain stays for a properly tensioned single speed chain; longer stays to accommodate a front derailleur -- the Tranny is always one step away from fulfilling your dreams. Both triangles are made from monocoque carbon, so whether you run it with the Shimano double drivetrain it's spec'd with or make the leap to a singlespeed setup, the Tranny takes advantage of its 29er pedigree by embracing speed without wasting watts due to high weight or low stiffness. The bottom bracket rides low for stability taking berms at speed and the thin seatstays and oversized chainstays stress comfortable compliance and stiff efficiency, respectively. The bike's Deore build is supplemented with a Race Face Respond crankset, and Stan's NoTubes' ZTR Arch Rapid wheels keep it rolling steady and tube-free. The Ibis cockpit components are dependable additions that keep the price reasonable without feeling like a downgrade, and the build is finished with a 100mm X-Fusion Slide RL fork.

To understand how it all started, take a trip back in time to 1980. Ibis founder, Scot Nicol read an article about the new ""Klunker Bike"" movement in the Spring issue of CoEvolution Quarterly-a friendly hippy magazine. The seed was planted. In 1981, in a workshop in Mendocino, California, the first Ibis bicycle was made. Glassy eyed onlookers saw the bicycle and asked Scot if he could produce more. Fast forward 30 years to present-day Ibis: a renowned boutique bicycle manufacturer with humble beginnings that continues to raise the bar in the mountain bike world. Ibis Tranny 29 Frame The Ibis Tranny 29 is fresh out of several years in development. Ibis's methodical approach to designing bikes left no room for error and they wanted to make sure everything was absolutely dialed before debuting the Tranny 29. The Tranny 29 is a beautiful tribute to cutting edge design. Ibis's lead designer, Roxy Lo, describes the Tranny 29 this way: The Ibis Tranny 29 is a lightweight, nimble 29er hardtail that is as versatile as it is fun to ride. Ibis set out to create a 29er that handled with the agility of a traditional 26"" bike and hit the nail square on the head. The Tranny blasts over bumps, carves through corners, and climbs like an angry mountain goat. The Tranny can operate as a geared bike or be easily converted into a singlespeed trail blazer. The Tranny 29's key design feature is it's Slot Machine technology. A sliding box section behind the bottom bracket allows for easy conversion to singlespeed. Chainstay length is adjustable, making it simple to dial in the perfect tension. A similar box design also resides at the top of the seatstays and allows you to take the whole rear end off of the bike. Remove two bolts and your bike is in two pieces. This removable triangle design also accommodates the use of a Gates Carbon Belt Drive. Ibis worked closely with their composite engineers to achieve a frame design that's not only beautiful but incorporates an array of performance features. The Tranny frame weighs in at an incredible 3.08lbs. The carbon layup found in the Tranny's chainstays is incredibly complicated. The chainstays need to be stiff but they also need to flex in the front when tightening the Slot Machine. Basically, they need to be stiff in one direction and flexible in another. The engineers at the factory had never heard of such a thing, but here we are a few years later, and Ibis has conquered the challenge.
